This Old House

C’est Fini

by Sharon on May 18, 2010

Last week my awesome husband showered me with love and devotion in the form of large, unwieldy rocks.

He labored in the freezing rain and snow showers (typical Mother’s Day weather) to say “I love you” in the nicest way possible. Home Renovations.

The front door was one of the final vestiges of the ugly duckling farmhouse that needed to be redeemed. This is what it looked like the day we moved in…

ugly house entrance
(please notice the metal hand rail wrapped with the, oh so lovely, pipe insulation. Just perfect for the sub-zero winters we enjoy.)

I think you’ll agree, his hard work has borne fruit…

Have I mentioned that I love this man?

This Old House: Three Years ago Today

by Sharon on March 10, 2010

Three Years ago today, Nature Boy and I were escaping the gray and dreary Upstate New York winter…

Literally.

We moved to Cooperstown from Northern California, and after five months of gloomy weather we were going through serious sun-shine deprivation.

It wasn’t pretty.

You know what they say Seasonal Affective Disorder? It’s all true and I was a good case study. You need sunshine to be a happy camper. And in case you didn’t know it, there isn’t a lot of sunshine in Upstate New York between November and April.

Mud? Yes. Snow? Yes. Sunshine? No.

So we escaped. We fled back to Chico where there are palm trees, and friends, and Chipotle.

Which is why it was three years ago today that we were lounging at the side of a pool when my cell phone rang. My older sister was calling with some news that was going to turn our lives inside out.

Our ugly duckling farmhouse, with horrible pink paint, mind numbingly ugly bathroom fixtures, and a God-forsaken heating system, had one more surprise for us… really bad plumbing.

Three thousand miles to the east the pipes in our farmhouse kitchen had burst. And for two days gallon after gallon after gallon of water had been pouring into the first floor of our house.

Kinda put a damper on our vacation.

We came home to this…

This…

Some of this…

A bit of this…

And a whole lot of this…

I wish I could say that I handled it joyfully, with grace, determination and faith….

But then I couldn’t tell you that I had a little breakdown and started crying in the paint aisle of Home Depot. (It wasn’t pretty. I think I scarred several burly working men for life.)

I couldn’t tell you about the dust and the discouragement and the four week stretch that I fed Nature Boy frozen pizza for dinner. every. single. night.

And I couldn’t tell you about how I strategically packed my entire wardrobe behind the mattress, kitchen sink, and refrigerator, requiring me to climb over all three of them in order to get dressed each morning.

Truly my finest hour.

But what I can tell you is that we survived it.

We worked hard and stayed up late. We painted and sanded and painted and scraped and painted a little bit more for weeks on end. We bonded over wooden floors, window panes and our new (old) kitchen sink.

And somewhere along the way we fell in love with our ugly duckling farmhouse.

And today, three years later, she’s turned into a swan.

Good, True & Beautiful

And what about you? What brought you JOY this week? What put a smile on your face, or a leap in your step? Willing to tell us about it?

What Could Be

by Sharon on February 17, 2010

There is something about the mentality of people who buy ugly houses.

Some might characterize it as “seeing the potential” or “being a visionary.”

Others might just call it lunacy.

My husband has the the visionary eye.

He fell in love with our ugly little farm despite the tragically decaying barn,

despite the yard that was full of garbage and abandoned stuff (like mattresses and wheels and beer cans and chicken poop).

the mortifying-ly ugly and very drafty rooms,

(this paint color is called Mango Tango in case anyone is interested – but I hope you’re not)

and the hands down, disgusting bathroom.

He fell in love with it because he thought it had the potential to be nice (that’s probably the same reason he married me)

And you know what?    He was right.  (about the house that is…  the jury’s still out on me).

He saw that this woeful, neglected and horribly pink disaster had the potential to be beautiful.

As for me, I don’t have the same talent…  It’s hard for me to see what could be.  I focus a bit too much on the here and now.

But I’m learning, by God’s Grace, to trust those who can see the potential of a situation and strike out with them to make changes.

And I’m learning, by God’s Grace, that I can be transformed too.

And I’m learning, by God’s Grace, that there’s JOY in the journey.

just for the JOY of it

And what about you? Any JOYS to share this week? Any things that put a smile on your face or a leap in your step? Wanna tell us about it?

Simple and Lovely

by Sharon on February 3, 2010

Have you ever noticed how simple things can be so pretty?

I made this sun catcher for Nature Boy this Christmas.

It’s just slices of tangerines that I baked in the oven for 3 hours at 200.  Then I tied them up with some burlap string and hung it in the kitchen window.

Simple, easy, but oh so pretty.

(not to mention affordable)

After I took the Christmas Tree down last month, I tied together our strings of cranberry and added them to the windows in our family room.

Just a simple string of cranberries adds a dash of color in the bleak mid winter.

Simple and Lovely.

Two of my favorite things – that works for me!

No Way!

December 28, 2009

I have nothing witty to say…  My creative juices have evaporated.  My paltry offerings are dusty and rusty and lame. My pale little attempts at humor have been humbled, stumbled and sent home in the face of real talent. Just wait until you see this and you’ll understand what I mean… A few weeks ago [...]

Decorating with Weeds

November 18, 2009

Over the course of my life, I’ve learned a few valuable lessons from my mom about decorating my home. First, she’ll tell you,  if you’re going to decorate, make sure you use odd numbers. A cluster of 3 or 5 has good symmetry. Second, you can blend together “cheap” and “valuable” and the cheap rises [...]

How to Make a Bedroom into a Kitchen

August 5, 2009

Nature Boy and I have long term dreams. We dream of adding to our family. We dream of adding to our income. We dream of adding to our house. Sadly, the house dreams are very long term (since we have to get the ‘little man’ out of college first). Not wanting to let a few [...]

Simple Home Hacks – part 3

July 1, 2009

I think three days might be the record for hanging out in my bathroom. It’s getting a little claustrophobic with all of you in such a small space! In appreciation of your perseverance, I’m pulling together a “before and after” post of the re-model… After all, nothing says “thanks for reading along” like pictures of [...]

Simple Home Hack – Part 2

June 30, 2009

Welcome back to the bathroom. Eegads, what must my mother be thinking?! I recently told you about my William-Sonoma conspiracy, so now it’s time to let you in on another little secret… I’m faking it. Yup, you heard it here first. I’m a big faker. You see, I happen to be married to a handsome [...]
