Patrick Hughes is a young man who was born with severe handicaps – yet despite being blind and unable to walk, he has flourished in ways that “able bodied” people would never be capable of. He is quoted as saying that he does not consider his limitations Disabilities, but rather Abilities, since what he has gained is much more valuable that what he has lost. And that comment made me think….
The Christian Church is in the season of Lent, the forty days leading up to the celebration of Easter. Many Christians will voluntarily “give something up” during these weeks; a self-imposed disability that might free us to focus on the things of God. And while it is easy to think of these sacrifices as limitations, I am going to focus on the opportunities they generate – to look for the abilities that the disabilities make room for.
