Alternate Title Considered: Good, True and Ugly

Today is the Little Man’s second birthday.

Two years ago today we welcome our first born son into the family…

{Isn’t it hard to wrap your mind around that fact that a person’s entire existence can be totally transformed in 730 days?
Profound.}

On Saturday I spent several hours creating a birthday cake to mark the festive day.

I whipped and beated, fluffed and melted. And all of my birthday-cake-making-labors resulted in….

…a big and ugly FLOP.

Not only did it look horrendous, but it tasted like sawdust.

How, might I ask, could I have taken butter and chocolate and sugar and ended up with sawdust? One of life’s great mysteries.

When I mentioned this to my sister Ali, she comforted me in my distress with the words, “you’re not very good with cakes, huh?”

I can’t imagine what she means by that.

{and I do recognize the inherent irony of sharing this glorious kitchen flop within days of announcing my first cooking lesson. Pride goeth before the fall}.

The flop ended up in the trash can, and Sunday’s efforts produced a much more pleasing result…

The difference? I actually followed the recipe the second time.

Crazy, huh?

Birthday cakes have been known to make me weep. Truly. I feel your pain.

Happy Birthday to your little man! We also just celebrated our son’s 2nd birthday this past Saturday. Don’t feel too bad about the cake…I’ve had my fair share of cake problems. :)

And why are they always crooked? Everything I bake is always crooked. Could it be that my stove it on a tilt? Gotta love old houses!

Happy Happy Birthday!! How exciting and the second cake looked fantastic! I feel your pain – I tried once following the instructions for home made frosting – HELLO – stirring in a bowl while in an ice bath – LOL! No idea how those bakers do it. I am sure your son loved it!

thanks Lynn! I think he did like it… although the whole, “blowing out the candles” thing was a little over his head!! Next year…

Sharon, I’m glad I read to the end of the post so I understood that your title and alternate title were describing your CAKE and not your SON!!!

Oh Golly!! That’s too funny!

Yes, the cake, not my son, was very ugly.

My son, of course, is perfect!

I’m impressed that you even tried to do it on your own. I’m a scratch open the box kind of girl myself.

Happy Birthday to your sweet little one! Yes, it is amazing how fast your life can change!

I would be all over that… cake from a box sounds so much easier! Unfortunately, Nature Boy is allergic to soy and that’s in pretty much everything. Oi!

Not the prettiest cake…. but the second one looks wonderful :)

exactly! We ditched the first one, and saved the day with #2!

Now you’ve made me nervous! I am making my sons birthday cake next week due to the prompting of a new friend who is like the cake GURU. Eeek… what do I do?!

Can “cake guru” come over and give you lesson!?

I’m impressed! Really! I don’t bake – and have bought every single birthday cake (save one that my mom baked for my first born’s first birthday).

Funny thing how those recipes make a difference, eh?

Happy birthday to your little guy! I am constantly amazed at how much my life has changed in just 2 and 1/2 years. Kids, make everything so different and better.

Oh, I’m so glad I’m not the only one with birthday cake troubles! I’ve been known to be reduced to tears over a crumbly mess (perfectionism dies hard with me).

You saved the day with that second one, though for sure!

Happy birthday, Little Man! May your next year be as blessed as your first two!!

Happy Birthday to your little guy! I had a lot of fun with age 2 :) Z’s cakes always taste good but look plain awful. I just can’t master the frosting. Your second cake looks beautiful.

Happy Birthday to your son! It’s so great that you baked the cake for him. Everything I bake somehow turns out to be a disaster. I guess it’s because I’m really bad following the recipes.

I am not a gifted baker. I try, I really do, but they never ever come out looking anywhere near as pretty as I want them to. I have resigned myself to the fact that it is just not one of my gifts. Not sure exactly what my actual gifts are yet, but I’m sure I have some.

Happy birthday to your little man!

LOL! Oh, I have had my fair share of kitchen flops! Like the casserole that was the consistency of soup. That would have been ok, but it tasted just as bad as it looked…

Oh NO! Soupy casserole can’t be good. I guess we can’t hit homeruns every time, right! And at least we can laugh about it!

I don’t even try with cakes. I did make one for my son’s first birthday and it came out well. Then my husband wanted to make the cake and I haven’t done it since. Maybe for his fourth birthday…who knows.
