Cooking Lessons and Play Dates

by Sharon on March 24, 2010

I have a girlfriend who is a wonderful source of encouragement. She always seems to find the sunny spots in a cloudy day. She never stands on pretense. And she laughs at my jokes.

Isn’t that a great combination?

A few months ago she told me that her mom had never taught her how to cook, and as a consequence, she thought that one day it would be neat to have cooking lessons. But, like every other mom with small kids, she never found the opportunity to do so.

Now let’s think about this…

I love to cook.

I love to hang out with this buddy.

I’ve never taught a cooking lesson in my life.

What else could I do?

So I opened up my big mouth and volunteered to teach her everything I’ve ever learned in the kitchen (plus a few ideas I made up, but I think they work ’cause I haven’t killed anyone yet).

We giggled like school girls as we whipped up a pound cake.

We filled the house with the yummy scents of Mexican spices and talked about our mutual love of all foods with cheese, sour cream and cumin. Yummmmm.

And I was once again reminded of Mrs. Murphy’s law.. that doing someone else’ dishes is much more enjoyable than doing your own.

And when I went home that afternoon I had a smile in my heart…

The chance to help out a friend was cool. But even more special was the chance to laugh and talk with someone whose company I really enjoy.

It’s official – I think all grown ups should have Play Dates. Just for the JOY of it!

Good, True & Beautiful

Oh I love it! What a great way to help out a friend. Want to come and help me next, I hate the kitchen and don’t cook very well, just well enough for us to survive, barely! I’ll link up once my scheduled post hits, couple hours to go. :)

We went to the zoo today and it rained on us but I have to say it was an adventure and I don’t regret it all.

Thanks for sharing your kitchen adventure. Sometime our mouth getting ahead of our brain is a good thing:)

Love it! I am not brave enough yet to teach anyone else how to cook…my “measuring” system would be interesting to say the least!

Sharon, that brought back the memory of when I first learned how to cook eggs. A dear friend volunteered to show me how to fry some eggs so I could serve more than hot water when I got married. LOL! It took many tries for me to get them eggs perfect though. Now whenever I cook my eggs, I think of my dear friend.
That’s a great idea of having mom’s play date, I’d come over to your home if we live close… maybe I should reconsider moving again… :)

We had a playdate this week as well! My very dear friend & I attended a art class held by ‘The Beattie Chicks’ and learned how to needle felt…it was a true grown ups playdate! Lot’s of laughter, lot’s of fun, a new skill learned, & even a little white wine!

So happy to hear you had one this week too! :)

wow, that sounds WONDERFUL. I’m totally not crafty, but needle felting sounds like something I would like. I’ll keep my eyes open for it (the felting AND the wine! Hee hee!)

Nice! I like your playdate. And your request for joy fit so perfectly with what I posted yesterday, so I linked up.

And I’m sure additional joy was spread by you when you left her kitchen all tidied up!

It is so true that doing dishes for other people is way more painless than doing your own. Odd.
