{Let me proactively say “I’m sorry!” to all the librarians who read this blog. Dori, Barb… you might need to avert your eyes}
I think I might have mentioned once or twice that our son has a thing about books.
He adores them.
He hugs them.
He sleeps with them.
He likes to eat them.
The first three traits he gets from his mother.
The last trait must be a throw back from some long lost fifth cousin Mervyn on his father’s side of the family, ’cause I had nothing to do with that.
Nuthin.
It was this little genetic mutation (and the correlating carnage) that led Nature Boy and I to spend two hours on New Years Day doing some serious book intervention.
Most of the books looked like this…
Fortunately, I am the daughter of a doctor so I felt well prepared to tackle the task.
Scalpel? check. Scissors? check. Duct Tape? check.
Too bad my dad specializes in the digestive tract. I probably could have used some tips from a plastic surgeon.
We persevered and after two hours of painstaking labor, back-breaking discipline, and a nice spot of hot tea we had a performed a few bibliographic miracles.
Unfortunately, the very hungry caterpillar now has some new problems to contend with…
Poor little guy. It’s all Cousin Mervyn’s fault.

LOL cute.
Great job. I'm a duct tape surgeon too.
Oh my, the boy sure does love his books! That is a good thing though. And eating a book or two never hurt anyone.
At least he is interested in books! You did a great job fixing them up.
What a great idea!
Oh Lord, I've done major surgery on lots of my kids books. Yes, duct tape is awesome! lol. Good fix!
Oh yeah! Another hat for us mums to wear — duct tape surgeon! LOL
I think we have a cousin Mervyn in our gene pool, too! Both of my boys love the sound of ripping pages or the taste of them.
Anything can be fixed with duct tape!
I was a school librarian, and it pains me to watch my daughter devour (in the literal sense) books. But I just let it go, figuring it's more important that she loves them than if they stay perfect. And then last weekend I washed an entire board book in the washing machine. "Hippos Go Beserk". I'm worse than my daughter! They are going to revoke my library license!
You're funny!
Just wait til the little guy gets to elementary school. You're going to be on the top of the school librarian's volunteer wish list!
Our "Very Hungry Caterpillar" book is pretty beat up, too. So is "My Many Colored Days" (which has another whole story all it's own for my kids…)
Peace.
Jeanine
Ha ha, too funny!
But seriously, I never thought to do this. I just throw them away. I don't know why this never occurred to me. Thanks!
That is so cute! Great Job!
UH, OH!!!
But you and your hubby did a very good job doctoring the books' spines…
Someday when the Little Man becomes a scholar, you'll be glad you invested in so many books…
Great post!
