How to ditch Blogspot

by Sharon on January 10, 2010

My friend Joy asked me a question today…

How is it that you use Blogger but don’t have blogspot.com in your domain name?

And even more importantly, how much does it cost to make the switch?

Well Joy, I have good news for you…  this is one change that is affordable and easy.  My favorite combination!

If you would like to change your domain name from the free blogspot.com to a “custom domain name” it will cost you $10 per year.

Here are the very easy steps on what to do…

First go into your Settings section and choose Publishing…

Select the link that says Custom Domain….

And then try a domain name and check for availability…  Google will suggest alternatives if the name you choose isn’t available.

Once you find a name that’s available, just fill out a simple form, and pay the $10.

Tada!  That’s it!  You have ditched the blogspot.com and are now part of the world wide web!!  Woohooo!

And in case you’re wondering:

  • one of the nicest things about making a switch like this is that Google/Blogger will do all the transition work for you over the course of ~3 days…
  • If someone goes to your old site, you can choose to have them automatically redirected to your new domain name.
  • Other than your domain name, nothing else will change about your blog.  You will still be using the Blogger software, all your followers, comments and pictures should be unchanged
  • Even your Feedburner information will automatically transition without you doing anything, so you won’t lose any subscribers!

Easy Peezy, Lemon Squeezy.

I hope this helps!

Let me know if you have any other Blogger questions I can answer… and if you found this information useful, please share it with your friends!

Great tip! I've neglected to purchase a custom domain because I didn't want any disruption with what little traffic I am building. I had no idea that Google would redirect. Thanks for sharing!:)

Great tip! Boy do I have lots of questions you could answer! What do you use to type your posts? Do you do it right in blogger or in something else then copy it over? I was using livewriter and thought I liked it till the last post I made and it was wrapping words and breaking them up in funny spots. UGH…it is so frustrating!

Any easy instructions for how to make a blog button? I'm trying to make a button for my list of 40 things and I am clueless and impatient. I want to take the graphic and make it so when it is clicked on it will take you to my post of 40 things.

OK … one more question (that shows how little I know about all this!!!) ~ when you switch over to the custom domain name, do you still work in blogger as I'm currently doing?

Thanks! I'm curious about adsense. I'd like to bring in some spending money from the blog with as little stress as possible. Do you offer special ad rates to fellow bloggers or just accept whatever google gives? How much can a person really make with ads on a blog with moderate (I'm always amazed at my analytics findings!) viewing?
