How to Make a Bow

by Sharon on December 6, 2009

Instead of spending money on bows, I’ve learned a very simple trick to make them myself.

You’ll need to invest in some ribbon…

I bought this spool at a floral supply store over five years ago.  I spent ~$15 on it and it should last me the rest of my life.

Wrap the ribbon around your hand at least eight times.

Take the ribbon off your hand and pinch it together with your fingers.

Now carefully cut the ribbon on both sides at an angle to each other.  Be careful not to cut too close together!

Now tie a knot around those newly created notches with a separate piece of ribbon (the new piece of ribbon should be about five inches long).

Once the knot is tied, pull the loops apart one at a time

You’ll want to give each loop a little twist at it’s base to create some asymmetry… You don’t want each loop all pointing in the same direction, but rather a three dimensional bow.

Ta Da!  A simple, handmade bow ready to adorn you next package!

I have never been able to make a good bow.
I am going to try this –
Looks easy enough that a klutz like me (seriously I am) could do it.
Thanks for the lesson!
