Over the course of my life, I’ve learned a few valuable lessons from my mom about decorating my home.
First, she’ll tell you, if you’re going to decorate, make sure you use odd numbers. A cluster of 3 or 5 has good symmetry.
Second, you can blend together “cheap” and “valuable” and the cheap rises to the occasion.
Third, once a year go out into the woods and find some Bittersweet.
In most eastern states bittersweet is an invasive plant (aka WEED!) that climbs through trees and bushes. So if you find some, you should have no qualms about cutting it down.
And then you can bring it into your home to add a beautiful decorating flourish – it has color, depth and natural beauty that I really like.
And best of all….
…it’s free!

Great tip, I love it! Also thanks for the book recomendation below.
Thanks! I enjoy bringing the outside in, too!
Great tip!!
What a nice way of spurcing up your home without spending a bunch of money.
LOVE your pictures. Bittersweet is such a pretty weed. I love how you used it. I decorate with primitives and bittersweet is always a favourite. Can't wait to look through the rest of your blog.
I like the tips and your decorations. I like to redecorate every single space in my house, my husband just laugh and of course, give me the money, haha.
I do love a WEED
!
I don't think I've seen these growing wild here in Europe, perhaps I haven't looked in the right places. I should look around for some local beauty though. It is simply beautiful in your home.
And decorating in odd numbers. Brilliant. I could have saved myself a lot of decorating mishaps if I had known this years ago.
very nice I wish I could get decorative.
Bittersweet. I never get to see the real thing. We’re in South Texas, and as far as I know, it doesn’t grow wild anywhere around me. So I buy the weeds. Isn’t that crazy? I have to buy it, and you can go pull the ‘weeds’ in your yard for decoration. hmmmm…maybe I need to learn some artistic way to decorate with crab grasss. That’s my weed. Not real pretty. Well, I think I’m just jealous, that’s all. Love what you did with it all!
