No, this is not a Art History seminar. And this will probably not be interesting to anyone who already using PhotoShop, or LightRoom, or GIMP, or Paint.net
But for the rest of the world allow me to introduce you to a really terrific, easy and FREE photo editing program called Picasa.
You will be glad to know this.
Picasa is a software program created by the geniuses at Google and can be downloaded onto your computer for free.
Why would you want to use Picasa?
- you can use Picasas to crop a picture to a new size. Or remove Red Eye. Or straighten it out…
- you can use Picasa to convert a Color photo to Black and White. Or make it sepia, or lots of other funky options.
- you can use Picasa to create a header for your blog or add graphics to a picture (that’s how I made my first header before I bought PhotoShop). Or you can use it to create a Christmas card….
- you can use it to retouch a blemish or distracting mark from a picture (not that my son has any blemishes, but if he did I could do that here)
- you can use Picasa to share pictures with friends and family without having to send them by email. Instead you can create a web album and share the link!
- And if you have a blog, you can use Picasa to upload photos right to a post.
- And did I mention that it’s FREE?!
Picasa is definitely a good place to start if you are just looking for some solid photo-editing and basic sharing capabilities. I suspect it would meet the needs of most bloggers and families. It’s what I’ve been using for the last several years with solid results.
Let me know if you have any questions, but I think you will enjoy what you can do with your photos!
You can download Picasa here
Google has not paid me to say these nice things about their free software. However, if you know someone at Google who would like to pay me to say these nice things about their free software, feel free to send them my way.

Picasa is what I use – mostly becuase it is free! We don't have the money right now to purchase photo editing software so for now, Picasa it is!
So far it has given me pretty good results – though for me the retouch tool could use some improvement. I can't complain though since it is free.
My problem is, I don't alwyas like to sit down for long periods of time to work on editing. I usually just edit as I go when I want to use a specific photo for something.
Grat post.
Before I got my photo editing software I loved Picasa, too! Its a great little (free) program.
I wanted to come by to let you know I've given you a little bloggy award on my blog. I hope you'll accept! I'm enjoying reading your blog and wanted to acknowledge it.
I have been using Picnik for a while, but I will definitely check out Picasa too now!
