Friday Fix It

by Sharon on September 18, 2009

It’s been almost a month since I started learning PhotoShop and I have to confess….  I’m addicted.

If you’re interested in playing along, check out I ? Faces – I actually look forward to these Fix-It challenges because I learn so much each week.  Really awesome.

Okay, here is the picture they asked us to work with:

Based on a terrific tutorial I read this week, I know that a picture is best when you leverage the rule of thirds but this photo had the disadvantage of being too far to the right.  I read a solution that Julie Rivera came up with and decided to try.
I’ve never expanded my canvas before, and I’m not particularly good at cloning but I gave it a whirl…

Here is my version:

I added an inch to the top, right and bottom and then cropped it down from there.
I filled the new space with a dark to transparent gradient (which I just learned about!) and then started smudging and drawing. I’m not a very adept artist, so I know this could be a lot better, but I tried!
Lassoed her face, and tweaked the curves to brighten it a bit.

Followed Julie’s advice to add some blur to the arms/hands

TaDa!

UPDATED: now that I’ve visited most of the other people’s versions of this picture, I had to come back and apply my learnings!

1). I removed the rainbow using the clone and patch tools
2).  I flipped the orientation
3).  I applied a texture (soft light, 25% opacity) which made a really nice, subtle change, especially with my blending

So much FUN!
What do you think?

Thanks so much everyone!

Wow, impressive solution! I am glad you were able to take some of my tricks and add your own twist to it. I know I need to get better at cloning…thanks for overlooking my result and just following the idea! :)

Nice, I love both your edits.
I also want to mention I am jealous, I have had my editing program for almost a year and still can't do all the things you did on this one!! LOL

I wish we had Photo Shop. Since we can't really afford anything else right now, we just use Picasa to edit pictures. It is good enough and I am ok with how the pictures turn out for now. I think you do a great job! I think every once in a while, there are pictures that turn out good enough to leave them the way they are but most pictures need at least some editing! Hope you had a great weekend!
